Wonderful Folk Art TRAMP ART chipcarved PICTURE FRAME Perfect Boston Primitive
Here is a nice tramp art picture frame, a real survivor in mint antique condition. Made from cigar boxes, probably in the 1890's, it has the typical edge-notching but also extensive chip carving. The decoration comprises one layer on a heavier wood base, with applied second-layer elements at the corners and midway on each length. The condition could hardly be better. Its geometric carved designs are competently done though aren't especially accomplished; it is an "everyman's" crafted item and perhaps another was never attempted. This, to me, enhances its folk value.
I have fitted this frame with a very funny cartoon by Charles Addams - the rest of the tourists are focused on stone gargoyles while one woman spots the real thing flying overhead, evidenced to the viewer by its shadow! I have used non-glare glass and a black backboard to frame this but the contents can easily be changed.
Outside size is 9 3/4" x 8 13/16", opening is 6 11/16" x 4 13/16", rabbet is 7 1/4" x 5 3/16". Only please - will not be disappointed! The item "Wonderful Folk Art TRAMP ART chipcarved PICTURE FRAME Perfect Boston Primitive" is in sale since Wednesday, February 24, 2021.
