This is a very sweet little frame indeed. Tramp art, comprised primarily of recycled wood from cigar boxes, is a folk art that has consistently appreciated since the'70's. This is a very clean and complete example, carved with skill and flair. The crossed-corner format has been greatly improved and elaborated to create what look like wings in the corners, deeply veined with gouge scoops. Three layers overall, the tip layers are precisely notched in a typical 45 degree fashion, while the first and second layers have long slanting grooves, all running in the same direction, actually giving the frame an impression of spiral, dynamic movement. I have only seen this skewed notching on tramp art a couple of times before. The gold painted finish (I suspect probably bronze powder in shellac) may not be original, judging by the splotches of brown on the back, but it is old.

Oxidation has significantly mellowed and darkened the gold for a pleasing antique appearance. There is some original penciled writing on the back that I can't make out, some numbers that may be "327" and -?

Opening size is 5 1/4" x 2 7/8". Overall size is 11" x 8 1/2". This is a great and rather unusual frame that presents beautifully and my valuation will reflect that.

IMPORTANT: This frame comes empty, without the painting, which is my watercolor of my first wife and our baby son. Any new image will easily take its place. [Boston Primitive] US buyers please.
