This is one of four known nearly-identical frames from the same hand. One came from Belgium and this one was found in Germany, so I've got to surmise they're European. Another, a polychrome version, is pictured in NO IDLE HANDS (plate 22) and also graces its dust jacket. One more is found on page 256 of TRAMP ART: ANOTHER NOTCH.

You might guess that these multiple appearances indicate. Commonness but I assure you that they are indeed exemplary if not unique creations. The swirling complex pyramiding on this frame, up to nine layers deep, is highly unusual as tramp art more typically uses simple geometric shapes in its design. Probably, most importantly, this is the only example of the group that is dated.

Though always assumed to be early, and identified as such, they are actually mid-20th century. It is a simply beautiful picture frame. The date crest has evidently been reattached, but a clean job (see below). One tiny teardrop-shaped tip at the bottom is missing (9th photo).

Overall size is 25" x 17". Rabbet size is 17 1/4" x 10 3/4".

Feel free to make a reasonable offer. I have ended this listing and relisted it at a lower price, showing more precisely the repaired area where "1941" was reattached. You have to look closely, and the last two new close-up pictures magnify, so exaggerate, the seam greatly, but there is some clear surface glue between the body and the date panel. I don't want anyone to be disappointed because this repair is not invisible.

Someone asked if the frame is different colors. I would say that it looks like it did alternate light and dark layers, but aging has diminished that contrast.
