This is one of four known nearly-identical frames from the same hand. One came from Belgium and this one was found in Germany, so I've got to surmise they're European.

Another, a polychrome version, is pictured in NO IDLE HANDS (plate 22) and also graces its dust jacket. One more is found on page 256 of TRAMP ART: ANOTHER NOTCH.

You might guess that these multiple appearances indicate. Commonness but I assure you that they are indeed exemplary if not unique creations. The swirling complex pyramiding on this frame, up to nine layers deep, is highly unusual as tramp art more typically uses simple geometric shapes in its design. Probably, most importantly, this is the only example of the group that is dated.

Though always assumed to be early, and identified as such, they are actually mid-20th century. It is a simply beautiful picture frame.

The date crest has evidently been reattached, but a clean job. One tiny teardrop-shaped tip at the bottom is missing (last photo). Overall size is 25" x 17".

Rabbet size is 17 1/4" x 10 3/4". Feel free to make a reasonable offer. The item "Museum Quality (Really!
